What is the cytoskeleton?

The cytoskeleton is very important for many different cellular functions. Without the cytoskeleton, our cells would not be able to move, divide, transport essential proteins, and carry out other functions that are essential for life.
The cytoskeleton can be compared to the musculoskeletal system of the human body. It provides structural support and allows for movement of the cell. The cytoskeleton can be divided into three components: actin, tubulin, and intermediate filaments. Each of these components are specialized to carry out specific functions.
